Wills
Digital Assets
Online accounts and digital property — from photos and email to crypto and social media — dealt with after death.
What it means
Digital assets are the online and electronic holdings a person accumulates: email and cloud-stored photos, social media profiles, domain names, loyalty points, online banking, and cryptocurrency. Some have real financial value while others are sentimental, and access often depends on passwords and provider terms rather than ownership. A modern Will should address how these are accessed and dealt with so the executor can manage them.
How it's used
Never put actual passwords in your Will, since it can become a public document after a grant of probate; instead point to a secure password manager. Example: a Will authorises the executor to access the deceased's cryptocurrency wallet and memorialise their Facebook account, with the keys held separately. Recording these instructions alongside funeral wishes helps loved ones avoid losing access to important accounts.
